  Item Description
  * As a result of the privatization of the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant remediation and redevelopment project DEMCO has committed to an accelerated cleanup at a scale not previously attainable by the Army. DEMCO has accepted responsibility for implementation of concurrent and coordinated explosive decontamination, demolition and RCRA cleanup operations at multiple locations across an expansive 9065 acre complex.
* This facility began operations in 1942, with its primary mission to manufacture smokeless powder and propellants. Additional installation operations included the manufacture and regeneration of nitric and sulfuric acids and munitions proving. During World War II, the Sunflower facility produced more than 200 million pounds of propellants and employed more than 12,000 people.
* DEMCO is contracted to perform various corrective measures at the site in accordance with the EPAˇ¦s RCRA permit. DEMCO will remediate the various contaminants of concern in 38 Solid Waste Management Units and 5 Areas of Concern to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment target media cleanup levels. Contaminants of concern include Nitroglycerine, Nitrocellulose, Guanadine Nitrate, Sulfates, Nitrates, Heavy Metals, VOCs, SVOCs, and Pesticides. An estimated 350,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil will be removed from the site.
„« DEMCO is also contracted to thermally decontaminate and remove 112 facilities where explosives were historically manufactured. These decontamination operations are being conducted in accordance with the Department of Defense Explosive Safety Boardˇ¦s requirements and DEMCOˇ¦s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms explosive permits. Asbestos will be abated from all structures and equipment prior to thermal decontamination and/or demolition operations. An estimated 3,900,000 square feet of concrete will be demolished and sized for later beneficial reuse on the site during this phase of the project. The work scope also includes excavation, removal and thermal decontamination of approximately 189,700 feet of explosively contaminated sewers and thermal decontamination and disposal of numerous explosively contaminated process equipment items.
